Faculty Recruitment at JKLU: Science & Engineering

At JKLU, we believe that the quality of faculty is key to quality to education. To that end, we are very highly selective about our faculty. Most of our faculty have a degree from IITs or BITS or NITs. And most of our faculty has a PhD degree.

We do have several types of faculty recruitment and this blog is an attempt to describe them. First a summary:

  1. Recent PhD from a top institution in India or abroad. This is our most common recruitment.
  2. MTech from a top institution as Lecturer. This is only for Computer Science.
  3. Existing faculty of IITs/NITs to come to JKLU on leave for upto 2 years.
  4. Recent Retirees or about to retire faculty of IITs/NITs.
  5. Professor of Practice - people in industry who love to teach full time.
  6. Senior PhD students as part-time faculty
  7. Visiting faculty for teaching a course: From top institutions or industry
  8. Lateral recruitment at all levels from other fine institutions.
  9. Any other mode that you can think of.

Our recruitment process is multi-stage. It is expected that you will send a CV to us. (Email address given at the end.) The Dean will forward the CV to faculty and feedback is taken based only on CV. Feedback is on two counts: Suitability with respect to our needs, and quality of CV as measured by research output and academic background. Then we invite the candidate to give a research seminar and a teaching seminar to our faculty. This could be online. Again feedback is collected. If we agree to the next stage, then that involves a one-on-one interaction with the top leadership of the university. At this stage, we may ask for reference letters too. There can be some tweaks here and there. For example, for people from industry, we may not have a research seminar. Senior faculty from IITs may directly be invited for interaction with university leadership.

Senior PhD students as part-time faculty is an interesting variant. If a senior PhD student has run out of fellowship because they have taken more than 4-5 years (whatever is the rule applicable to them in their institution), we can provide them an employment where they can stay at JKLU and do their thesis writing. We only ask them to teach one course. Rest of the time they work on their thesis. We even provide a hostel room, a shared office, travel support to visit their supervisor, travel support to invite the supervisor, etc. So not only they get the money that they need to continue supporting themselves, but this also is a good way to understand whether they would want to become a full time faculty or not.

We do recruit M.Tech. from top institutions as Assistant Professor. This is done only in Computer Science as of now. They will obviously be paid less than those who join as AP after their Ph.D. Typical salary for a fresh M.Tech. with no prior experience would be about Rs. 1.0 lakh per month. But your mileage may vary.

For visiting faculty, we expect the teaching to be done in class. We may be flexible in terms of a few lectures being online, but that should be an exception. We would also be flexible in terms of schedule. We could schedule classes in a way that one can teach their lectures in two continuous days if they are traveling from outside Jaipur.

We have had Professors of Practice even before NEP2020 and UGC talked about it. We have seen that many industry professionals want to give back and are keen to interact with young minds. Some of them after 25-30 years of career in industry want to completely move to academia, while others want to take a break for 5-6 months and teach and then go back to industry. We love both, whether someone wants to join for one semester or several years.

Many universities and institutions have retirement age which is 60, or 62 or 65. Today, most people are active at that age. And we are happy to provide post-retirement positions in JKLU. We can provide an on-campus housing and all the facilities to ensure that they don't have to go through a lot of problems in settling down in a new city.

As you can see, we are completely flexible. From full time to part-time to visiting, from one semester appointment to appointment till retirement. From academia as well as industry. The only thing we are rigid about is the quality.

JKLU is one of the best private universities when it comes to Computer Science education. As I mentioned in the beginning, most of our faculty in Science and Engineering have a PhD and a majority of our faculty have a degree from top institutions like IITs, NITs, IIITs, BITS, or abroad. One of the factors that many people consider in choosing private university is the environment and the kind of colleagues they will work with. We rank high on both counts. For PhDs from top institutions, we benchmark our salaries with the 7th pay commission salaries in the government sector.

At the time of writing this blog, we are primarily interested in recruiting Computer Science faculty. Even those whose primary degree and research focus is not in CS, but their teaching interests are in CS, we would be happy to explore.

If you are interested, please send an email with your CV to faculty-applications@jklu.edu.in
